The Friends Of Hwange Trust - A Brief History

History of Friends of Hwange
Friends of Hwange was formed on the back of the extreme drought of 2005 that severely affected Hwange National Park. The National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority of Zimbabwe, plagued by lack of funding and a decrease in tourist arrivals, did not have the funding to keep enough borehole pumps going. As a result, only a handful of waterholes had water. Countless animals died of thirst.

Hwange National Park has no perennial rivers and very little natural surface water. Today most of the water has to be pumped from boreholes in order to sustain the current animal populations. Since its inception in October 2005, the Trust has been responsible for 10 waterholes in Hwange National Park. This has involved raising funds to purchase diesel as well as repairing and maintaining the diesel engines, boreholes and troughs.

This 7 day trip will involve a series of short walks in the Park accompanied by a professional guide. It will be a non-strenuous camping trip with tents, beds, hot showers, delicious meals and plenty of opportunity to get to know Hwange intimately. The participants will be divided into two groups and will be driven to different locations each day where they will conduct the walks in areas of significant interest.

Friends at Work

A big thank you.

The trustees would like to acknowledge and say thank you to the individuals and companies that have made a donation to the trust this year.

How to support the work done by the trust

The Friends of Hwange Trust is a non-profit organisation that is entirely funded by donations.

All funds donated are properly administered and used in the Park for the benefit of wildlife through water supply management and to ensure long term sustainability of the Park.

FOH work in co-operation with National Parks and consult with them on a regular basis.

FOH is a completely independent organisation. We are not affiliated with any other trust or organisation.

We purchase all materials needed ourselves and ensure that they are utilised in the park in accordance with what the funds were donated for.

Every small donation helps. For the same amount of money you spend buying a round of drinks for your mates at the bar, you could be supplying the diesel needed to water 500 elephants for 24 hours. Now that’s value for money!
